I find it interesting that Sarah only lived 127 years. Compared to Methuselah who lived 969 years, there seems to be a huge difference in lifespan. I wonder if this is due to the increase of sin in the world?

Genesis 22-23
This is an awesome chapter that records a true test of faith for Abraham. Only God would choose the perfect time to test Abraham's faith. In previous chapters we learn that Abraham lacks faith and a fear of the Lord, but in this chapter he was about to slaughter his only son, Isaac, before the Lord intervened. At this point, we know that Abraham feared God. Could you imagine having faith like that- enough to sacrifice your only son?

I read this chapter last night and couldn't help but cringe. There is no way in the world I could sacrifice my own son like Abraham so willingly did. What his faith must have been like to KNOW that it was God actually speaking to him, asking him to do this unimaginable act, I can hardly fathom. Maybe Abraham recalling in his mind that God had said it would be through Isaac that his line would be carried out and that's where his ability to act came from.
ReplyDeleteAlso, did you notice in verses 15-18 that the angel of the Lord tells Abraham that BECAUSE the did not spare his son, God would bless him. It makes me wonder if the promise was conditional. (?) I have to start looking these things up!
I did some reading on the conditional promises of God, and it turns out that there are many! Even consider John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life." That doesn't say that everyone will have eternal life, but that those who believe. There is a condition that must be met for this promise!
